This was Nocturna Discordia #60 and the 4th free improvisation jam at Soda Acústic and, wow, what a big crew showed up this Wednesday, there were a total of 28 musicians including the opening trio! Was it for the flyer??

Once more the groups were formed randomly, but this time the possibilities ranged from duo to quintet, picking the performer’s names out of my pocket. That was cool but, for sure, gotta perfect the formula when there’s such a crowd willing to play…

The opening trio was

3rd Impro Jam @ Nocturna Discordia

This was Nocturna Discordia #56 and the 3rd Free Improvisation Jam Session.
Barcelona, 20 January 2016

The trio that opened the night was:
Patxi Valera – drums
Àlex Reviriego – double bass
Luiz Rocha – soprano and bass clarinets

Then, once again the routine was:
1. pick a name out of a hat;
2. throw a four-sided dice to define if the musician is playing either solo, duo, trio or quartet;
3. back to the hat, pick the other names, if applied.

At the second round we were throwing 2 four-sided dice so that everyone could play once more.

Impro Jam at Soda Acústic – Nocturna Discordia #32 – 1st July 2015

Discordian Records organizes Free Improvisation concerts every Wednesday at Soda and yesterday was the first jam session. The opening concert was a quartet composed by Ada Rave (ts), Nicolas Chientaroli (pn), Vasco Trilla (dr) and me, Luiz Rocha (cl).

Ada y Nico curate the Impro Jam in Amsterdan. Playing and sharing a house with them at a the Free Flow Festival in south Italy and joining some great jams in Portugal at MIA and Desterro made me feel the urge to see such a thing in Barcelona: a meeting place where free improvisers – with different backgrounds, concepts and experience, can share music and communicate.

Simple mechanism: for each performance we threw a 4 sided dice to define if the group was either a solo, a duo, a trio or a quartet; then we picked the names of the musicians out of a hat. The grand finale was El Pricto conducting an improvisation with all the musicians who wanted to join.

Will be repeated.
